How to update Plugin or Theme

Method 1: By using the following plugin:

WordPress will let you install a NEW plugin or theme from a zip file, but it does NOT allow you to upgrade them from a zip file. If you try to update from a zip file, you will get an error message that says, “destination already exists” and the upgrade will fail. WordPress will not allow you to upgrade from a zip file.

The following plugin will allow you to easily upgrade from a zip file, avoiding the “destination already exists” error message.

1- Download zip file of your plugin or theme’s most recent version from

2- Download the following plugin (click here to download or click this link to get the latest version of this plugin), and activated.

3- Log in to WordPress as and Admin and go to Appearance > Themes.

4- Click on the ADD NEW button.

5- Click on the UPLOAD THEME button.

6- Click BROWSE and choose your zip file you downloaded.

7- Click the INSTALL NOW button.

There is also an option to create a backup copy of the old plugin or theme, in case there is a problem with the new version.

Method 2: Update WordPress plugins manually:

First thing first. Create a backup of your entire website before updating the core, themes or plugins so that you could revert the changes if anything odd occurs.

Before starting the manul update process, deactivate the target plugin or theme.

Step 1:

Get the Latest Plugin At first download the latest version of your target plugin from It should be a .zip file. Extract the zipped archive. You will get a new folder containing the plugin files and folders.

Step 2:

Access the Plugins Directory So you have the latest version of the target plugin in your computer. Now you need to install (upload) it to the server of your target site. Use an FTP client or visit the cPanel and follow this directory path It will show all of the currently installed plugin folders.

Step 3:

Apply the Update Once you are in the plugins subdirectory, open the target plugin folder. Delete all of the files and folders inside it and paste/upload everything from the folder (in your computer) containing the latest version of the plugin. You can also simply replace the older version’s folder with the newer one you’ve just downloaded. That’s it.

After successfully following these steps, visit> Plugins> Installed Plugins and activate the newly updated plugin. Hope you will find this procedure easy. Also, you may like my previous post how to update WordPress themes manually. Please let us know your thoughts too. Thanks for reading.
